One L.I.D. Project, 3 Perspectives: Designer, Contractor, Owner

Bill Murphy, P.E.

Real-world case study of a site plan that incorporated four different GI/LID stormwater management and water quality systems in the same site as a treatment train. Cost savings and ease of maintenance were secondary results after achieving water quality goals within tight site and geographic restraints. Take a look at one project from three different perspectives to better understand the Who, What, Why, Where and When. Walk away with practical ideas for your own GI/LID projects and a better understanding of key points to assure long-term performance of your site improvements. All of these same concepts and systems can be incorporated into existing infrastructure or included in new construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Civil Engineers/Landscape Architects: learn how to design permeable pavement/underground detention combinations and stormwater pretreatment and water quality treatment trains.
  • Contractors: learn how to successfully bid and build green infrastructure/low-impact development systems including permeable pavement, underground detention, stormwater pretreatment and water quality systems.
  • Owners/Cities/Maintenance Contractors: learn what to look for during construction and upon project completion with examples of O&M (Operations and Maintenance) manuals featuring key points.

Presented by Bill Murphy, P.E., Civil engineer for Bowman Construction Supply

Bill Murphy, P.E., specializing in stormwater, green infrastructure and low-impact development solutions. After practicing as a consulting civil engineer for 15 years, Bill entered the erosion control/sediment control and stormwater industry as an applications engineer responsible for education, product development and technical support across the US. Bill has presented at IECA national and chapter events, EPA regional conferences, and at a variety of cities, counties and state agencies. He provides educational seminars (“Clean & Green”) and lunch-n-learns at civil engineering and landscape architecture consulting firms. Bill works closely with contractors at pre-con meetings, during installations and provides training for proper maintenance of green infrastructure stormwater systems.
